Covid-19 - I'm in a dire financial situation, can I immediately make my employees redundant?

No. Despite these uncertain times and the dire financial situation that some employers are unfortunately in, there is still a need for fair process before making decisions that affect your employees. Employees cannot be made redundant without a fair process. Yes, the timeline can be truncated in a dire financial situation - but nonetheless a fair process must be followed. This includes providing your employees with access to information relevant to the continuation of their employment and an opportunity to comment on that before you make your final decision.

I am working on a suite of documents that will be available soon for purchase for employers that need some assistance in following a fair process when consulting with their employees about reducing hours, redundancy or other matters affecting their employees.

Finally, communicate with your employees in these uncertain times. Many employers are asking their workforce for flexibility right now and most employees are agreeing and working with their employers to save businesses and keep jobs open for when we recover from this.
